Heads Up! All About Breech Babies

Faeryn Arrives

Mom and midwife have arrived at the hospital. Mom copes with contractions while the midwife smiles (its a beautiful thing to attend a mom who knows what she wants!)

Mom has had a great deal of urges to push and is only 6 cm. It was suggested to mom that because of the baby presenting footling breech and her strong urge to push she get an epidural.
Ready to go!!

Baby is "rumping". Mom has been positioned on her back with legs in stirrups. This is primarily due to having the epidural on board. The meconium is present not from stress, but from the buttocks and abdomen being squeezed as the baby descends the birth canal.

The attendant supports the perineal tissues as baby fully descends and "her" legs unfold for the first time. Baby was presenting as a footling breech.
It is very obvious the baby is rotating her body through the pelvis as she descends the birth canal.
The baby is now out to the umbilicus. The attendant stands ready to manipulate the baby through its progression down the birth canal.
Manipulation of the body by the attendant is meant to mimic the natural movements of the baby through the birth canal should the mother have been upright and un- medicated.
Out to the arm pits and waiting for the arms to descend out of the birth canal.
Out to the neck. Mom is now pushing to get the head out.
Baby nice and pink with daddy at her side.
Nice healthy weight. (3805 grams = 8 pounds 6 ounces). Wee one (or not so wee one!) has that typical look of a breech baby, the very prominent forehead.

This picture captures the energy of the midwife as she phones her partner to tell her that the mom has birthed breech vaginally !!!!
Baby has a cuddle with mom ....and a snooze.
