Heads Up! All About Breech Babies

Breech Births with Intervention

Every woman enters into birth with the tools and knowledge that she believes will take her through the birth process to result in a healthy baby. Moms that choose to birth breech also want a healthy mom at the end of the day as well. Moms that birth their babies vaginally do so knowing that their bodies are capable of doing so.

Birth in a medical setting will generally need to follow certain protocols. For some moms concessions with medical professionals are made so that they can birth in the manner they feel is best.

Interventions during breech birth often occur due to protocol, physician education and standards of care. If the mom is highly dependant on the care provider to "deliver her baby", the intervention applied during the birth is much out of her control. that said...intervention that is judiciously applied has it's place during any birth.

Enjoy the stories.

Fearyn Arrives - "Somewhere in my head I had already wondered about that but I had dismissed it thinking "Don't be silly!  There's no way this baby is breech!  Everything is going the way it's supposed to, remember??" .  Ok, so the baby is breech, I thought and told people, no biggie! "

Cyndal is born by the breech - "The news that this baby was breech, in my 39th week, hit hard and fast. ...A strong believer in natural birth, I began to wonder what would become of the beautiful homebirth I was planning."

Courtney's birth  - "I had been examined the midwife said I was 7cm dilated and that she felt something like peas. I went into panic mode. I kept repeating "that's my baby's toes, it's upside down". (gas, stirrups, and episiotomy mentioned)

A Father's Tale- ""Your baby's presenting breech". (Ha! fooled them, they hadn't noticed until now, the feeling is almost one of revenge!), "We must call a doctor fast". (on the Birthlove website, membership required)

Mark - "When I got to 38 weeks, she did a vaginal exam and told me she thought that the baby was presenting breech... a few days later I felt the baby turn again ... Then, I felt him turn again (!!), so he was once again vertex... now 40 weeks, he turned again (!!!). " (very interventive birth, baby to NICU).

Due to a computer crash some stories have been lost. I am keeping what I have here and searching for them to be put up at a later time. Thank you for your patience.

Laura - A resident asked Barb if we were going to a "section room" and she said in no uncertain terms, "No, we're going to delivery!"  In the delivery room it was a cast of thousands since it was 7:30 in the morning and everyone wanted to see the rare vaginal breech birth.
